Vocational education

What is vocational education?

Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions have a strong vocational focus. This means that graduates are able to apply what they learn in the classroom directly to the workplace.
Overseas students enrol in vocational courses in Australia to:

  • improve their chances of getting into university study
  • gain practical, work-based skills to improve their employment prospects
  • take advantage of the many courses available
  • enjoy the individual attention that smaller class sizes allow
  • enjoy the advantages of life in Australia.

Where are vocational education and training course taught?

Vocational courses are taught at Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes, private colleges and at many universities. The range of courses is very wide — from hospitality to engineering, fashion design to tourism. Many institutions also offer English language courses, which take four to 48 weeks to complete. The Australian vocational training system is organised so that you can begin your study at the certificate level and then build on that to achieve higher qualifications at university if you wish. Vocational training is also a great way to increase your career prospects or to progress in your existing job. Many vocational institutions will provide you with credit towards a degree course at a university.
